JUMP – A Small, Convenient Smartphone Power Bank

JUMP

If there’s one problem with USB power banks, it’s that you’ve always got to remember to actually charge them. And they take another slot on your laptop to charge as well. Although these might seem minor inconveniences, sometimes they do strike hard when your phone suddenly runs out of power and you find out that the power bank’s run out of juice as well. JUMP is a new kind of power bank whose designers say is impossible to be left uncharged, and here’s why.

JUMP

JUMP

JUMP is a compact little device with a neat nylon cable that wraps around the device itself for better portability. It weighs just a bit more than a couple of AA batteries so you can carry it easily. What’s impressive about this device though, is the way it works. You see, the device has two cables. One that goes into your smartphone and one into the power source. Once your smartphone’s all juiced up, the device detects that and redirects the excess power to charge the JUMP device itself. Sounds brilliant, and that’s why the designers say you’ll never have a dry JUMP device.

But with a device so small, what kind of battery power can you expect? Native Union, the company behind the product, say that the JUMP has a 800mAh battery inside it, which can keep the average smartphone running for a further 3 or 4 hours of talk time. That’s more than enough to send some emergency text messages and make some important calls. Demanding users will still want a high capacity power bank though, but for those of us who use their smartphones moderately, this device makes a lot of sense.

JUMP

JUMP is currently in the funding phase at Kickstarter, but they’ve already received 4 times the initial funding goal of just $40,000. Most of the early bird offers have been availed, but there are still some good deals available for people who pre-order this device. For $40, you can get a JUMP with a choice of a Lightning or microUSB connector. Yeah, $40 isn’t exactly cheap for a 800mAh power bank. But its compactness and practicality are the main selling points. You’ll still need a separate high capacity power bank if you’re a particularly heavy user, but you’ll always have a reliable backup with the JUMP.
