We’ve come across a plethora of devices that all aim to record our sleep patterns for later analysis. That’s all very good for people interested in looking at their sleep activity and these devices do a tidy enough job. But what about actually making you sleep better? Not just passively, but actively. That’s where the Aura alarm clock comes in. Its name is quite deceiving, because it’s so much more than just an alarm clock.
The moment you look at the Aura alarm clock, you know it’s going to be something special. The design language of the device is extremely well thought out, and the body alone is relaxing to watch. It’s more than just a pretty thing though. That large circular opening actually houses a multi-color LED flood light. Don’t worry though, it won’t blind you. The engineers have made the light coming out of the LED highly diffused, so it’s just an eerie glow rather than being an ostentatious display of colors. The science behind the LED is that light can make you sleep and wake up better. At night, the light will mimic the glow of the sun going down, slowly putting you to sleep. In the morning, the LED glows blue, the color of morning! This mimicry gets the mind going, and you wake up naturally. Oh and there’s subtle red lighting too, for romantic nights.
Right, so that was the active part of the helping-sleep-better process. The passive part comes courtesy of the Aura sleeping pad. It’s a soft pad that you can slip under your mattress. The pad keeps track of your sleeping activity. You can monitor the quality of your sleep and your in-sleep activity by transmitting the data from the pad to your smartphone. The designers say that this is just an added bonus of the whole package. The real goal was to help you sleep better. All this help doesn’t come cheap though. The Aura Alarm Clock costs $299, but if you’re constantly getting good sleep because of it then it’s not a bad investment at all.
