Pebble have unveiled a premium version of their popular smartwatch called the Pebble Steel. As the name implies, the new Pebble Steel will feature a metal body which is of course a big departure from the regular Pebble smartwatch’s trendy but still plastic construction. Thankfully, the metal body is every bit as sharp-looking as the cheaper Pebble.

The metal body of the Pebble Steel isn’t striking or glamorous like a Louis Vitton time piece, rather it’s a very retrained and understated design that we like a lot. The Pebble is finally a properly good looking time piece with some modern tech inside. There are two colors available for the Steel, the Brushed Stainless and the Black Matte. Both of them look fantastic. The software of the Pebble has also received some tweaks, and on the Pebble Steel the UI is noticeably quicker.

Fortunately for current users of the Pebble, this change is not hardware reliant – the Pebble Steel has the same internals as the regular Pebble. The UI tweaks will available to regular Pebble users in a coming update. Pebble are also releasing the SDK 2.0, which is being built entirely in Javascript. That means that there will be a more focused development strategy for anyone looking looking to extend the Pebble’s functionality.

One thing that potential buyers have to realize is that the Pebble Steel and the regular Pebble aren’t fully blown smartwatches, rather they’re all about having a glance and finding out relevant information. For complex operations we always have our smartphones with us. For example, Pebble’s ESPN app lets you check your favorite league’s scores. It’s all about simplicity while still being connected to your favorite things. The Pebble Steel is up for pre-order at Pebble’s online store for a price of $250. Response to the watch has been positive, so expect your order to be shipped sometime late February.
