The first Galaxy Mini was an atrocious device. Wearing the Galaxy name tag, the so-called smartphone could barely muster through the Android operating system as well as its big brother, the Galaxy S did. But the latest iteration in the Galaxy Mini line looks to be a pretty potent device. But the new Galaxy S4 Mini isn’t going to be alone in the watered-down flagship market. That’s because HTC has a potent ‘Mini’ device in their upcoming arsenal update as well. The device is said to be a smaller, weaker version of the HTC One flagship and is being called the HTC One Mini. How well does it compare to Samsung’s established line of Galaxy Mini phones? Let’s find out.
HTC One Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini – Design and Build
Let’s clear things up before we start. Despite wearing the ‘mini’ tag, these two smartphones are hardly mini. Both of them have 4.3 inch screens, so they’re not exactly miniature versions of their elder siblings. But the similarities between the two’s design ends here. The Galaxy S4 mini has a largely plastic build, so it’s not going to win any design awards. Whereas the HTC One Mini retains the One’s premium build quality and its lovely industrial design. It actually looks a bit like an iPhone thanks to its smaller screen, and that’s no bad thing. The iPhone is a looker, after all.
HTC One Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini – Display
Both these devices will feature 4.3 inch displays. The HTC One Mini will reportedly have a 720p HD panel using LCD technology. The Galaxy S4 mini on the other hand, will feature Samsung’s acclaimed Super AMOLED display technology albeit with a lower resolution of just 540×960 pixels. Not only is the resolution lower than the HTC, but as it’s not a Super AMOLED ‘Plus’ display, it’s going to have a PenTile matrix arrangement of the pixels as well. So the effective resolution is even lower than 540×960. If the panel used in the HTC is of high quality, they could have a huge edge over the Samsung Mini smartphone.
HTC One Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini – Hardware and Performance
Performance is as important as anything for these two smartphones. Sharing the names of flagships isn’t enough, they have to perform like them as well. Both the HTC One Mini and the Galaxy S4 Mini will be using dual-core processors, and if reports are to believed, it will actually be the exact same silicon as well – Snapdragon S4 processors with Krait cores. Although, the Samsung has a higher clock-rate at 1.7GHz against the HTC’s 1.4GHz. That, coupled with its lower screen resolution could mean better UI and gaming performance. The Samsung will also be using a whole 512 megabytes of RAM more than the HTC, at 1.5 gigabytes. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini clearly has the upper hand when it comes to performance.
HTC One Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini – Camera
The HTC One Mini will feature an Ultrapixel camera that could be sourced directly from the One flagship. While the Galaxy S4 Mini uses a traditional 8 megapixel sensor. The 8 megapixel sensor will capture more detail and account for larger prints but, the image quality of the Ultrapixel camera will arguably be much superior thanks to its advanced sensor and great low light performance.
