Up until now, the Samsung Galaxy Note had the premium phablet market to itself. LG made an effort to benefit from the large-screen-craze of our generation, but their Vu phablet wasn’t exactly a critic favorite. But more recently, major industry players have announced their own big screen smartphones in an effort to gain some of the Note’s market share. There’s the Huawei Ascend Mate, a 6-inch behemoth ‘phablet’ with a beautiful screen and a very tempting price tag. And then there’s the recently announced Sony Xperia Z Ultra. The Z Ultra will be going directly against the forthcoming Galaxy Note 3, with its cutting edge specs and large screen. And if rumors are to be believed, HTC seems to have set its sights on that Note 3 market as well, with its latest effort, being called by the press the HTC One Max.
MobileGeeks have quoted sources close to HTC’s manufacturing process as saying that the new phablet will be the company’s flagship device. The HTC One Max phablet will reportedly feature a full HD display measuring at 5.9 inches and the latest silicon that Qualcomm has to offer – the Snapdragon 800. The quad-core chip will be clocked at an absurdly-high 2.3GHz, a touch higher than the Xperia Z Ultra’s 2.2GHz clock rate. If these numbers are to be believed, it seems the One Max won’t be playing second fiddle to the Galaxy Note 3 in terms of hardware specifications. The Note line of products have traditionally been a bit more powerful than the current generation Galaxy S phones, so HTC’s madness isn’t without reason.
An area that the Galaxy Note has thus far neglected, is the build quality. The Note 3 may have the generation’s best hardware, but following Samsung’s philosophy, the build has been an all-plastic affair. And if the latest Galaxy S is any indication of what we can expect from the Note 3 in terms of design and build, then the HTC One Max might have the upper hand in this case. The HTC One has been lauded by critics for its premium build quality and top notch design. So it seems logical to assume that the One Max will follow a similar design language as well.
If the rumors prove to be true, Samsung could have a problem on their hands. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a beautiful tablet with a large screen at a whopping 6.4 inches. The HTC One Max on the other hand will have a quality build and a premium feel. It will be interesting to see how Samsung tackle these new but very capable competitors. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is expected to be revealed at this year’s IFA trade show in Germany.
