I know, I know, you see all these great reviews of these wonderful smartphones on these pages, and you just can’t wait to get your hands on one. But if you are really in the market for a new smartphone, maybe you should wait just a few more months.
Autumn brings more then just a change in seasons. While the winds turn brisker and the leaves turn to a vibrant palette of reds and golds, it is also the time that a lot of new mobile technology makes its debut. There are a few reasons for this. Technology tends to move in cycles, and traditionally manufacturers, and especially Apple, tend to roll out new devices and upgrades in October and November. Current rumors regarding the release date of the iPhone 5 support this trend. Also, all manufacturers tend to hold off on revealing their latest and greatest devices for the Fall to take advantage of the holidays.
Fresh in the Fall
Rumors abound about what is coming around the bend with highly anticipated next generation phones from Apple and Microsoft. There is ongoing speculation about the impact of the yet to be resolved legal battles between Apple and Samsung, and more recently Motorola. About the only thing that can be said with any kind of certainty is that the smartphone landscape will be significantly changed come October. So unless you really need to replace your phone right now, my advice is to wait awhile.
So what else might you see on the shelves beside cranberry sauce and a new iPhone come Thanksgiving? Microsoft has already started showing off what Windows 8 can do, and it has already confirmed that no existing Windows Phone will be able to upgrade to the new OS. So, if you want the best that a Windows Phone has to offer, you need to wait for the new handsets that will come equipped with Windows 8 in the Fall.
If you read my columns on Jelly Bean or are already an Android user, then you know that the ability to upgrade your device to the latest Android OS whenever it becomes available is spotty at best. But you can be sure there will be a greater variety of handsets that come out of the box with Jelly Bean after the summer.
If you are the type who must have the newest technology as soon as it hits the market, sit tight. If you are the type who suffers buyer’s remorse as soon as the latest version of your mobile device is released, now is not the time for you to make a change. If you are just chomping at the bit to get your hands on an iPhone 5 or New iPhone, or whatever it is that Apple decides to call it, then relax and enjoy the rest of your summer, and check these pages in the Fall. On the other hand, however, if having the be-all and end-all device is not that important to you, then you just might be able to grab a real bargain on some current models of smartphones that manufacturers want to clear out before their big fall releases.
