Amazon Sees $ 1 Billion Worth Cellphone Sales

Today’s smartphones have become a necessity for many people who need technology to get their job done. Resultantly cellphone sales have gone up. This was recently proven by Amazon during its Q2 earnings call.

Amazon posted net sales of $6.57 billion; out of this, $1 billion was attributed to cellphone sales.

The company’s founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, had this to say regarding cellphones:

“In the last twelve months, customers around the world have ordered more than $1 billion of products from Amazon using a mobile device. The leading mobile commerce device today is the smartphone…”

He also mentioned the potential of tablets and was optimistic about their growth by saying:

“…we’re excited by the potential of the new category of wireless tablet computers. Over time, tablet computers could become a meaningful additional driver for our business.”

The smartphones and tablets of today are clearly making our jobs and lives easier. These sales figures can only rise from here.

Sony Ericsson’s Phone Sales Increase Finally

In spring 2009 the smartphone manufacturing company Sony Ericsson suffered losses totaling $276.58 million. Since then the company has taken a number of measures to turn their situation around.

The most noticeable of these measures was downsizing. The company’s large scale job cuts included letting go about 4000 employees – that is more than a third of their entire workforce. Additionally the company cut costs in other production areas. These moves could save Ericsson over $1.14 billion.

Another step by Sony Ericsson in the right direction was its newfound focus on smartphones. Xperia X10, Ericsson’s Android running phone, and Vivaz, the Symbian running phone, both got a wide release by the company and were met positively by consumers. The X10 mini and X10 mini pro also did well in the market.

So what exactly did all this result in?

This week Sony ended the week on a very positive note – Ericsson moved 11 million phones in spring. This is a significant improvement over the winter when the company moved 10.5 million phones.
