But we digress: Life can be a lonely journey, and for decades now people have tried to go past the traditional means of meeting new people and leverage advancing technology to find that special someone. It’s hardly surprising that there’s a rich field of dating apps out there for your smart phone.

The people signed up to OK Cupid Dating are not the people posting Craigslist ads seeking Bears, if you catch our drift. If you consider yourself the normal type of person looking for a girl/boyfriend, eventual marriage, and a house in the ‘burbs, then OK Cupid Dating is probably the app for you.

You have the advantage of access to their extensive overall network of lonely folks, including a ‘locals’ feature to find lonely folks near you so you don’t have to, you know, put much effort into it or anything. Because the last thing people want on dates is effort.

But maybe the suburban home with a bar in the basement for your wild 3pm parties isn’t your thing, and you want a slightly weirder experience. Fair enough: Check out POF (Plenty of Fish) if you think you can stand an onslaught of cuteness in your dating app experience. They claim to have 50 million users. How that’s possible is a mystery, because if that many people were single the planet would be depopulated in days, but let’s let that drift.

You can search through profiles yourself or let POF suggest folks for you. Be warned, a lot of fish imagery abounds. You could be the ‘catch of the day!’ On the other hand, it’s free to sign up and use, which is what we like to hear, because the last thing people want on dates is someone spending a lot of money on them.

The simply and directly named Dating is the Mr. Goodbar of dating apps. It makes no bones about finding your life partner or marriage, it’s all about flirting and meeting singles and having fun. We’re pretty sure ‘having fun’ is code for something, but we’re far too sheltered to guess what it could possibly be. It includes a feature that purports to show you who’s in the area around you, which could be a lot of fun in a bar or nightclub. Although that also has some serious stalking possibilities … not that we know anything about stalking people. Next question!

Finally, if you identify as a geek – and we’re presuming you do since you’re reading this part of the article, unless you accidentally stumbled here during your Google search for ‘beer and booze’, then Geek 2 Geek may be more your style. They don’t seem to have a huge database of people, but they’ve been around for a while and are probably happy catering to our rather niche group.
