iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Let’s Settle It For Once And For All

You might still remember our post on Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I do agree that those two phones aren’t quite a fair match for a number of reasons. But how about an Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 match-up? Without doubt, Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 is a battle between two worlds; this match-up is destined to result in some grueling bouts of craziness. However, it’s the sort of fight that many would enjoy watching. We shall let you play the spectators today and get the Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 brawl underway. Here we go!

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 build and design.

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 – Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Build and Design

Apple iPhone 5 may not seem like a quantum leap from the previous variants in terms of design, but it largely remains simplistic. It’s known for its premium looks and feel. Apple has done justice to the franchise and only built upon its image by replacing the plastic back with aluminum. The aluminum does have its drawbacks as it can be easily nicked and scratched. On the bright side, the iPhone 5 feels much lighter and slimmer than its predecessors.

Samsung Galaxy S3 may not strike everyone with its looks. However, it takes a few good steps in terms of design to attract your attention. Firstly, the phone is curvier than ever before. This attributes to an enhanced feel without posing many handling issues. The plastic back does not fare better than Apple iPhone 5’s aluminum back. However, the plastic used is not cheap by any stretch. You must give credit to Samsung for a nice hyper-glaze finish on the SGS3. This does add a touch of fanciness to SGS3’s makeup.

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Display

Perhaps the only thing similar about the two phones is the 16:9 aspect ratio and relatively bigger screens. The differences commence immediately after comparing Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3. If it’s only display size we are comparing, SGS3 easily wins with its 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED screen over iPhone 5’s 4-inch IPS display. However, it’s unfair to base our comparison over size alone. While size matters, it only partly contributes to SGS3’s dominance.

Apple iPhone 5 may lack the extra screen estate that SGS3 enjoys but it benefits from enhanced sharpness instead. The display is brighter with a pixel density of 326ppi against SGS3’s 306ppi. Despite SGS3’s better resolution on paper, many would prefer the RETINA display in regards to brightness and contrast. Plus, it fares well under the sun. SGS3 isn’t bad by any means but it just misses by a whisker as the differences are fairly marginal. Sadly, SGS3’s display has consistently been reported by users as being fragile. Drop it once and chances are that the glass would have completely shattered on the spot.

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: User Interface

Choosing between two different operating systems is a rather subjective matter if one must compare Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 . The iOS 6 and Android v4.0.4 operating on the two phones benefit the devices in their own special ways. As always, Apple iPhone 5 remains simple and fluid in terms of its operations. However, there is hardly anything fresh about it.

Conversely, SGS3 benefits from a plethora of flexibility built into the Android OS. Android Jelly Bean brings a wide array of features to the mix. This is well complemented by Samsung’s own Touchwiz UI. There is abundant room for customizability so that users can fully customize the UI to their liking. SGS3 surely won’t restrict you like the Apple iPhone 5 does with the limitations in the iOS.

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Performance

Going by iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3’s spec sheet, SGS3 downs the iPhone 5 with a better processor in 1.4GHz Quad core processor against iPhone 5’s 1.2 GHz Dual core A6 processor. Moreover, 2GB of RAM on SGS3 encourages multitasking without slowing down the system. iPhone 5’s 1GB RAM doesn’t quite boast the same class. The A6 processor is still powerful and helps the iPhone deliver a substantial punch.

Expandable storage for SGS3 is a strong point against non-expandable storage on iPhone 5. 4G connectivity may be good news for iPhone 5 owners, SGS3 enjoys many more connectivity options along with NFC. Moreover, SGS3’s excellent 2100mAh battery makes iPhone 5’s 1440mAh battery seem average in its performance. This might be a big factor for potential users.

    Wait… what?
“two of the best cameras witnessed on smartphones.”

Have you even tried a Nokia Lumia with PureView? :S

  • PeterK

Well besides the 41MP camera, Lumia Pureview is crap of a phone. I do think that some sony xperia phones have pretty badass 13MP cameras

  • Aadil

He said two of the best cameras, not the best and he is right as they do rank among the top cameras and its not all about megapixels if you anything about cameras.
And PureView is not a technology but a label to nokia’s innovative camera phones.

  • Syed Hassan

There’s absolutely no denying that Nokia Lumia Pureview trumps cameras on both these phones.

Like Aadil just mentioned, the point of mentioning two of the best was to emphasize they are AMONG the best cameras on smartphones. They aren’t THE best, surely.

I do agree with you, SuperAndroid.

  • Syed Hassan

I would agree that Xperia lineup has a good range of snappers but don’t you feel Nokia Lumia 920 has made an impact with its camera features?
